HMRC EnquiriesHMRC Enquiries

The right professional expertise in dealing with HMRC can make dealing with a tax enquiry much less stressful, time-consuming and costly. Enquiries into clients frequently do not result in additional tax being due and any penalties are reduced due to the quality of responses provided to HMRC. Typically these will have been triggered by some risk factors but random enquiries are also made.

  • HMRC open Tax Enquiries into submitted tax returns including personal and company self-assessment, VAT and PAYE returns to challenge those returns and ask for detailed explanation and justification of the return submitted. HMRC might initially be interested only in one aspect of the return or the enquiry might be very much more wide-ranging.

The costs of handling HMRC enquiries are not included in our normal annual fees but both Tax Enquiries and Business Record Checks are covered by the Tax Compliance Service available for clients which is backed by insurance cover. This is a no nonsense policy allowing Elizabeth Whiteley Accountancy Limited (not someone you have never dealt with before) to deal with all enquiry correspondence from HMRC as well as attending meetings with HMRC, where necessary, with the costs being covered by our policy. There is no pressure to take up this cover if you don't feel it's necessary for you, but it's there if you would value the peace of mind it offers. If you would like to join then please contact us.

Inheritance Tax and ProbateInheritance Tax and Probate

Information and simple advice provided on the basics of inheritance tax, such as exemptions and gifts. Referral is available for specialist inheritance tax and planning which may also include strategic lifetime planning protecting some assets from care home fees and also protecting any inheritance from loss in future divorce settlements.

It is always wise to keep financial affairs and papers in good order and that may help to make things more are straightforward and manageable for whoever ends up having to deal with a death.

If you have to sort out the affairs of a family member as an executor or administrator you might like some professional help to:

  • Sort out the tax affairs up to the date of death such as tax return preparation for the final year or two up to the date of death.
  • Establish the value of the estate at the date of death as required for probate.
  • Calculate the inheritance tax and complete the inheritance tax return.
  • Prepare executors' accounts, estate tax returns and calculation of legacies.

There are frequently close, continuing and often lengthy relationships with tax return clients and their families where the accountant is a trusted go-to advisor for financial matters who you are used to working with. It is frequently not necessary to engage a solicitor, or only for limited aspects of the process, which helps to keep the cost to a reasonable level. If you would like a helping hand at a difficult time then please contact us.
